Hitman: Agent 47 star Rupert Friend is set to try his hand at directing and writing for a second time with the biopic Cornerman about boxing trainer Cus D’Amato. The project is currently in pre-production with GK Films and Fabrica de Cine.
According to The Tracking Board, who released the news, “Cornerman will focus on D’Amato’s relationship and journey training Tyson in an effort to cement his legacy. Casting is underway for the film, which is being produced by Graham King and Denis O’Sullivan of GK, Gastón Pavlovich of Fabrica, as well as Aimee Mullins and Lawrence Inglee. Legendary boxing trainer Cus D’Amato seeks to cement his legacy by mentoring a troubled, teenaged Mike Tyson toward becoming the youngest boxing heavyweight champion of the world.”
It is not the first time that Rupert directs, although it’s the first film, since previously he directed a short film, Steve. He has had other directorial experiences with documentaries and a music video for Kairos 4Tet’s band.
Totally excited about the news, I can’t wait to know more about the project!!
